Frequently Asked Questions: Home Heating & Cooling Costs

How does this calculator account for winter and summer temperatures in my state or province?

Every state and province in our database is mapped to its verified 30-year NOAA / Environment Canada Heating Degree Days (HDD) and Cooling Degree Days (CDD). A cold region like Quebec (8,100 HDD) or Minnesota (8,100 HDD) demands nearly 4x the winter heating BTUs of a mild state like Texas (1,850 HDD), while Texas demands 6x the summer air conditioning load.

What is the difference between this calculator and the BTU & Tonnage Sizer?

This page calculates your monthly utility bills ($/mo) and 15-to-20 year equipment return on investment. If you are shopping for a new unit and need to know whether your home requires a 2.5-Ton, 3-Ton, or 4-Ton system based on ceiling height and window sun exposure, use our BTU & Tonnage Sizer.

Can I calculate heat pump savings if I have rooftop solar panels?

Yes. Use the Solar Panel Quick Toggle on the right (or enter an exact percentage in Advanced Mode). Because heat pumps, mini-splits, and electric baseboards run on electricity, solar net-metering directly offsets their annual operating cost—whereas natural gas, propane, and heating oil bills cannot be offset by rooftop solar.
